Fantasy Premier League launched on July 23, 2026, with a £100.0 million budget and a new set of prices shaped by last season’s points, projected roles and the opening fixture list. The Premier League added another group of players on July 27, confirming that the database will continue changing as summer transfers are completed.
Erling Haaland starts at a record £15.5 million. Bruno Fernandes costs £12.0 million, Gabriel is the first £8.0 million defender, while Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka are both £9.5 million.
Those figures measure season-long fantasy value. They do not represent the probability that a player scores in one specific match.
The Opening Price Table Has Three Different Messages
FPL prices combine historical production, positional scarcity and expected demand. The same price can therefore describe very different assets.

Main opening-week question |
|
Erling Haaland |
Forward |
£15.5m |
Can his captaincy ceiling justify 15.5% of the budget? |
|
Bruno Fernandes |
Midfielder |
£12.0m |
Will his minutes, penalties and creativity repeat? |
|
Gabriel |
Defender |
£8.0m |
Can clean sheets and defensive contributions support the record price? |
|
Cole Palmer |
Midfielder |
£9.5m |
Does Xabi Alonso restore his 200-point potential? |
|
Alexander Isak |
Forward |
£9.0m |
Is the central Liverpool role secure after an injury-hit season? |
|
William Osula |
Forward |
£6.0m |
Do five goals in seven late-season starts translate into regular minutes? |
The first mistake is treating price as a ranking of Gameweek 1 goal probability. Gabriel costs more than several forwards because he can collect clean-sheet, goal, assist, bonus and defensive-contribution points across 38 matches.
Expected Minutes Come Before Expected Points
A player cannot justify his price from the bench. Expected minutes should therefore be the first filter applied to every draft.
Haaland has the clearest centre-forward role at Manchester City and topped the 2025/26 FPL standings with 239 points, 27 goals and eight assists. Bruno Fernandes delivered 235 points after producing nine goals and 24 assists. Their prices reflect both output and security of involvement.
Isak is less certain. He managed only eight league starts in his first Liverpool season, but Hugo Ekitike’s long-term injury may give him control of the central role. That makes preseason starts and penalty responsibility more valuable than his old Newcastle totals.
Osula costs £6.0 million after starting Newcastle’s final seven matches and scoring five times. His value disappears quickly if a new striker arrives or the manager returns him to an impact-substitute role.
Fixtures Affect Teams Before They Affect Players
Arsenal host promoted Coventry City in the opening match. Manchester United then face Hull City and Ipswich Town in their first two fixtures. Those matchups help explain the early interest in Gabriel and Fernandes.
Fixture quality must still be connected to role. A cheap winger facing a promoted side is not automatically useful when his expected playing time is 25 minutes. A defensive midfielder may play the full match but offer little attacking upside.
Use team win probabilities to estimate match control:
-
Strong favourite: more possession, shots and clean-sheet potential.
-
Narrow favourite: more balanced distribution of attacking returns.
-
Underdog: fewer clean-sheet expectations but potentially more defensive actions.
-
High-total match: stronger scorer and assist potential.
-
Low-total match: clean sheets gain relative value.
Promoted clubs can also generate defensive-contribution points for centre-backs who face repeated pressure.
Ownership Measures Exposure, Not Quality
During the first 24 hours after launch, Haaland appeared in approximately 71% of squads and João Pedro in about 45%. That information describes rank exposure, not the probability either player returns points.
Highly owned players reduce rank damage when they score. Lower-owned players create larger gains when they outperform expectations. Neither route is automatically correct.
Ownership becomes useful when combined with captaincy. A 70%-owned Haaland captained by most active managers carries far more effective ownership than a 45%-owned forward who is rarely given the armband.
Avoid selecting a player only because the percentage is rising. Before Gameweek 1, prices remain locked until the deadline, so early transfer activity does not create immediate team value.
A Mobile Research Workflow for the Final Draft
Keep the FPL squad, injury news and match prices in separate browser tabs rather than relying on one summary page. Compare the player’s FPL cost with his expected minutes, set-piece role and the team’s implied win probability. The Melbet app can support this mobile workflow by keeping country-facing match odds, totals and scorer markets accessible beside the fantasy player list. Odds should be recorded with a timestamp because preseason injuries and confirmed line-ups can move them quickly. A short scorer price is useful evidence of market expectation, but it should not override rotation risk or FPL’s position-specific scoring rules.
Use the same device to check the official club injury page before locking the draft. Social-media rumours are faster, but they regularly omit training restrictions and recovery timelines.
Transfer Fees Do Not Set FPL Prices
A club pays a transfer fee for age, contract length, scarcity and resale potential. FPL prices a player’s expected fantasy output within a fixed £100 million game.
Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea in a reported British-record £117 million deal, yet his fantasy value will depend on how he shares central areas with Palmer. A huge fee suggests importance, not guaranteed penalties or 90-minute appearances.
Christos Tzolis was added as a £6.5 million Arsenal midfielder after launch. His price is more relevant to fantasy managers than the transfer fee because it determines the alternative players available in the same budget bracket.
When evaluating a new signing, ask:
-
Which current player loses minutes?
-
Does the signing take penalties, corners or direct free kicks?
-
Is he classified correctly in FPL?
-
Can he start in more than one position?
-
Did he receive a full preseason?
Scorer Odds and FPL Prices Answer Different Questions
Anytime scorer markets estimate the chance of a goal during one match, subject to expected playing time and bookmaker margin. FPL price estimates broader value across goals, assists, clean sheets, defensive contributions and bonus points.
A £15.5 million forward can have the shortest scorer price without representing good value for every squad structure. Spending that amount may remove Fernandes, Gabriel or a second premium midfielder.
Convert decimal odds into a basic implied probability:
Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds
A scorer price of 2.20 implies roughly 45.5% before margin adjustments. That still means the player is more likely not to score than to score in that match.
FPL managers should compare that probability with captaincy potential and replacement cost. A premium asset becomes easier to justify when he is both the best captain and difficult to replace with two cheaper players.
The Gameweek 1 Checklist
Before the August 21 deadline, score every player from zero to two on six factors:
-
expected minutes;
-
penalties and set pieces;
-
fixture quality;
-
injury status;
-
team win probability;
-
price flexibility.
A player scoring 10 or more deserves serious consideration. A high price cannot rescue uncertain minutes, while a low price cannot create points for a substitute who never enters the match.
Recheck newly added players after every confirmed transfer. The July 27 update added Daizen Maeda at £5.5 million, Hidemasa Morita and Aladji Bamba at £5.0 million, Aaron Anselmino at £4.5 million and Mike Penders at £4.5 million. Their names are now live in the official game, but their preseason roles still decide whether any belongs in an opening squad.
